f you’re reading this today, congratulations: you have almost made it safely to the other side of the week.
I took this picture last Friday and saved it for a week to share with you. It was funny then, the idea that I may be conditioning a house full of children to anticpate the start to their weekend with the kind of appetizer you’d enjoy half-price at a Ruby Tuesday happy hour. But we can’t know where we will find ourselves in a week, and today the idea of nachos sounds comforting rather than kitschy.
Things are changing all the time. Occasionally, there’s a day (or several) when you’re able to see just how much has become different—in your life and in those of the people that matter to you. Some of those days found their way into the last week. This isn’t necessarily bad, but it can be unsettling to get a glimpse of the way things are going to be altered—are already transfigured, really—in the weeks and months ahead.
It’s at moments like this that I find myself wishing for a storm, some weather event that will close things down around me, slow down the inevitable arrival of the new world order. Retreating and reflection are hungry work, though, so I’ll just be enjoying a big plate of my favorite continental comfort food while making whatever mental adjustments might be required of me going forward.
Because make no mistake, change is coming. It’s just more palatable with a side of nachos.∗
